چکیده

We consider the effect of surface mass flux and forced axial flow on the boundary-layer flows over rotating spheres, with a view to establishing flow-control mechanisms for rotating flows of engineering significance. A theoretical study is presented which considers the onset of convective instability modes (both stationary and travelling relative to the rotating surface) and local absolute instability. Suction is found to be universally stabilising in terms of the delayed onset of both instability types. Extensive theoretical data are presented for future comparison to experiments. © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The stability of the boundary layer on a sphere rotating in a uniform axial flow

We consider the local convective and absolute instabilities of the boundary layer on a rotating sphere located in a uniform axial flow, extending our previous work, which considered still outer fluid. Axial flow is seen to stabilise the convective instabilities, and our predicted onset of the spiral vortices is in good agreement with existing experimental data. The vortex angle is found to incr...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...

Boundary-layer transition on broad cones rotating in an imposed axial flow

We present stability analyses for the boundary-layer flow over broad cones (half-angle ψ > 40◦) rotating in imposed axial flows. Preliminary convective instability analyses are presented that are based on the Orr–Sommerfeld equation for a variety of axial-flow speeds. The results are discussed in terms of the limited existing experimental data and previous stability analyses on related bodies. ...

Global stability of the rotating-disc boundary layer with an axial magnetic field

A numerical study is conducted to investigate the influence of a uniform axial magnetic field on the global linear stability of the rotating-disc boundary layer. Simulation results obtained using a radially homogenized base flow were found to be in excellent agreement with an earlier linear stability analysis, which indicated that an axial magnetic field can locally suppress both convective and...

Free convective heat and mass transfer of magnetic bio-convective flow caused by a rotating cone and plate in the presence of nonlinear thermal radiation and cross diffusion

This article explores the heat and mass transfer behaviour of magnetohydrodynamic free convective flow past a permeable vertical rotating cone and a plate filled with gyrotactic microorganisms in the presence of nonlinear thermal radiation, thermo diffusion and diffusion thermo effects. We presented dual solutions for the flow over a rotating cone and a rotating flat plate cases. Similarity var...
